Interesting to see people encountering the benefits and downsides of Mastodon in real time. Federation is a huuuuuge advance over resting control with a single billionaire Jack or Zuck - but comes with usability and privacy tradeoffs. One reason I’m bullish on Mastodon: I think it has the potential to jumpstart “innovation via 3rd party client” again.

Maybe Mastodon is like a late 60s/early 70s-style back-to-the-land movement. The “counterculture packing it in and moving to subsistence communes in Oregon” of social networking.

Just finished “The Big Picture: The Fight for the Future of Movies” by Ben Fritz. Highly recommended for a look at how Hollywood filmmaking is adapting to the Golden Age of TV, streaming, the rise of cinematic universes, the decline of star power, the increasing importance of China, and a bunch of other factors.
